Tuv, Övörkhangai, Arkhangai & Bulgan

Central Mongolia: The Most Varied Region per Hour of Driving

Short answer

Central Mongolia is the best region for a first trip with limited time. Within 2–6 hours of Ulaanbaatar you get Hustai's wild horses, the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes, ancient Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery, the Orkhon Valley World Heritage landscape, hot springs and volcanic lakes in Arkhangai. A 5–8 day loop covers the highlights with less driving per day than the Gobi.

“Central Mongolia” isn’t a formal region — it’s how travelers and operators describe the band of provinces west of Ulaanbaatar: Tuv, Övörkhangai, Arkhangai and Bulgan. It’s where the steppe meets the Khangai mountains, and where much of Mongolian history happened.

Why it works so well for first trips

  • Shorter drives. Most days are 2–5 hours, much of it on paved road.
  • Variety. In a week you can see wild horses, sand dunes, a 16th-century monastery, a waterfall, hot springs and a volcanic lake.
  • Horse country. The Orkhon Valley and Arkhangai are among the most accessible places for riding, from an hour to multi-day treks.
  • Easier comfort levels. More ger camps with decent facilities, and hot springs resorts in Arkhangai.

The main places, west from Ulaanbaatar

Hustai (Khustain Nuruu) National Park — about 100 km from UB. Home to reintroduced Przewalski’s horses (takhi), the last truly wild horse subspecies, returned here from 1992. Visit in the evening when the horses come down to drink. A good first night.

Elsen Tasarkhai — an 80 km-long strip of sand dunes in green steppe, roughly halfway between UB and Kharkhorin. Camel rides, short dune walks, and Khögnö Khan mountain with a small monastery nearby.

Kharkhorin and ancient Karakorum — site of the 13th-century Mongol imperial capital. Today: Erdene Zuu Monastery (founded in 1585, built partly with material from the old city), the Kharkhorin Museum, and the Monument to the Mongol Empire on the hill.

Orkhon Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Highlights include the Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan), Tövkhön Monastery on a forested ridge, and river-valley riding country. Tracks here are rough; allow time.

Tsenkher Hot Springs (Arkhangai) — several camps pipe natural hot water into outdoor pools. A favourite rest stop after days of driving.

Tsetserleg — a pleasant provincial capital with the Zayain Gegeenii Süm monastery museum.

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake & Khorgo volcano — a freshwater lake in a lava landscape, with an extinct volcano crater you can walk up. Often the link between Central Mongolia and Khövsgöl.

Driving reality

Leg (approx.) Typical time
Ulaanbaatar → Hustai 2 h
Hustai → Elsen Tasarkhai 3–4 h
Elsen Tasarkhai → Kharkhorin 1–1.5 h
Kharkhorin → Orkhon Waterfall 3–4 h (rough track)
Orkhon Valley → Tsenkher 4–5 h
Tsenkher → Ulaanbaatar 8–9 h (long day, mostly paved)

Times are typical estimates and vary with vehicle, weather and stops. More: driving distances in Mongolia.

Best time

June to September. July and August are greenest and warmest, with afternoon rain possible. September is quieter and crisp, with autumn colour in the valleys. Before June and after September, nights are cold and some camps close.

Who it suits — and who might look elsewhere

Good fit: first-time visitors, families, older travelers wanting shorter drives, horse riders, culture and history lovers, anyone with 5–8 days.

Look elsewhere if: you specifically want big desert scenery (the Gobi), a large lake and taiga forest (Khövsgöl), or high mountains and Kazakh eagle culture (Western Mongolia).

Do you need a guide here?

Of all regions, Central Mongolia is the most realistic for independent-minded travelers: the paved road to Kharkhorin is straightforward and Hustai and Elsen Tasarkhai are well established. A driver who knows the Orkhon Valley tracks is still very useful. See do you need a guide? and self-driving Mongolia.

Questions travelers ask

Is Central Mongolia better than the Gobi?

Neither is better — they're different. Central Mongolia has more variety per hour of driving (horses, rivers, monasteries, forests, small dunes) and shorter drives. The Gobi has the big desert landscapes. With a week or less, Central Mongolia is usually the more relaxed choice.

How many days do I need for Central Mongolia?

Four to five days covers Hustai, Elsen Tasarkhai and Kharkhorin. Seven to eight days adds the Orkhon Valley, Tsenkher hot springs and possibly Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake at a comfortable pace.

Can I see 'the Gobi' in Central Mongolia?

You can see sand dunes at Elsen Tasarkhai (often marketed as the 'Mini Gobi'), and camel rides are offered there. It's a genuine dune strip in green steppe — lovely, but not the same as the South Gobi.
