Itinerary

7 Days in Mongolia: Central Mongolia and the Orkhon Valley

Short answer

For a first week in Mongolia, a Central Mongolia loop gives the most variety for the least driving: Ulaanbaatar → Hustai → Elsen Tasarkhai → Kharkhorin → Orkhon Valley (riding, waterfall) → Tsenkher hot springs → Ulaanbaatar. Expect two long driving days. If desert is your priority, the 7-day Gobi loop is the alternative — but you can't comfortably do both in a week.

Seven days is the most common trip length we’re asked about. The honest advice: pick one region and do it well. This route is our default suggestion for a first week, because Central Mongolia packs the most variety into the least driving.

Why this route works

  • A full day without driving in the Orkhon Valley, where riding and walking are at their best.
  • Wild horses, dunes, monasteries, a waterfall and hot springs in one loop.
  • Most roads are paved, except the Orkhon Valley section.

The trade-offs

  • Day 7 is long (8–9 hours). Alternatives: return via Kharkhorin and overnight at Hustai (making it 8 days), or skip Tsenkher and return from the Orkhon Valley via Kharkhorin.
  • No Gobi. For desert, see the 7-day Gobi loop instead, or extend to 10 days.

Variations

  • Naadam in July: start with the opening ceremony in Ulaanbaatar on 11 July, then head out. See Naadam.
  • More riding: replace Elsen Tasarkhai with a second Orkhon Valley night and a two-day horse trek.
  • More comfort: choose camps with ensuite gers at Hustai and Tsenkher.

Vehicle and crew

Two to four travelers fit comfortably in a Land Cruiser–type 4x4; a Delica or Starex van suits larger families. A driver alone can run this route; a guide or driver-guide adds a lot at Kharkhorin and with herder visits. See driver vs guide.

Questions travelers ask

Is a week enough for Mongolia?

A week is enough for one region done well. The most common mistake is trying to fit the Gobi and Central Mongolia into seven days by road.

Can I do Gobi and Central Mongolia in 7 days?

Technically, but you'd spend most days driving 6–8 hours. If you want both, look at 10 days, or fly one way to the Gobi.

Can this route be done without a guide?

Yes, with a driver who knows the Orkhon tracks. Central Mongolia is the most independent-friendly region. A guide adds context at Kharkhorin and smoother herder visits.
