How Much Does a Mongolia Trip Cost?
Short answer
The biggest cost in Mongolia is transport: outside Ulaanbaatar you almost always need a driver and vehicle. Budget travelers on shared hostel tours can spend under US$100 a day; a private trip with driver, guide and ger camps for two typically costs several hundred dollars per person per day. Group size matters most — four people sharing a vehicle pay far less each than two.
Mongolia costs are dominated by one thing: getting around. Once you understand that, the rest of the budget is predictable.
The three main budget levels
| Style | What it looks like | Rough daily cost per person |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Hostel in UB, shared guesthouse tours, basic camps, public buses | Under ≈ US$100 on tour days; less in UB |
| Mid-range independent | Private driver (no guide) shared by 3–4, mid-range camps | Roughly US$100–200 depending on group size |
| Private with guide | Own driver + guide, good ger camps, all meals | Commonly several hundred US$ for two travelers |
These are our broad ranges derived from the published price points below — not quotes. Your actual cost depends on route, days, group size, vehicle and supplier.

- Guide or no guide. Adds a daily fee and a seat.
- Vehicle. Land Cruiser types often burn more fuel than vans.
- Accommodation. Basic camps vs ensuite gers vs herder stays.
- Season. July (Naadam) is the most expensive and busiest.

Questions travelers ask
Is Mongolia expensive?
Day-to-day costs (food, SIM, local transport in Ulaanbaatar) are moderate. What makes Mongolia feel expensive is that seeing the country requires a private vehicle and driver for days at a time, often for a small group. Shared tours bring costs down a lot.
How much cash should I bring?
Enough for the countryside part of your trip (tips, drinks, extra activities, anything not prepaid). ATMs are reliable in Ulaanbaatar and provincial centres, not in between. See our money guide.
Why do private tour quotes vary so much?
Different vehicles, guide vs no guide, accommodation standards, whether fuel and crew costs are included, group size, season and the operator's margin. Compare itemised inclusions, not headline prices.
