Money in Mongolia: Cash, Cards and ATMs
Short answer
Mongolia's currency is the tögrög (MNT). Cards work widely in Ulaanbaatar; in the countryside, cash is king — ger camps, herders, small shops and fuel stops often take cash only, and ATMs are found only in towns. Withdraw or exchange enough in Ulaanbaatar for the countryside part of your trip, in a mix of note sizes.

Questions travelers ask
Should I bring US dollars to Mongolia?
Bringing some clean US dollars or euros as a backup is useful — they can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices in Ulaanbaatar. Day-to-day you'll pay in tögrög.
How much cash do I need for the countryside?
It depends on what's prepaid. If your trip is all-inclusive, you mainly need cash for drinks, tips, souvenirs and extras. If you're paying camps, fuel or drivers locally, you'll need much more — plan it in advance.
Can I pay the driver or guide by card?
Usually not on the road. Agree how and when you'll pay before the trip — cash, bank transfer or via an operator.
