Arriving at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (Ulaanbaatar)

Short answer

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) is roughly 50 km south of central Ulaanbaatar — about an hour's drive, up to two in rush hour. The easiest option is a pre-arranged transfer (your hotel, driver or operator). Taxis are available; agree the fare first. Public bus information conflicts between sources, so don't rely on it without checking. Get cash and a SIM at the airport or in the city.

Pre-arranged transfer

Mongolia’s main international airport opened in 2021, replacing the old airport close to the city. It’s much further out, which surprises many first-time arrivals.

Getting into the city

  • Pre-arranged transfer — the simplest, especially for late arrivals. Your hotel, driver or operator can meet you.
  • Taxi — available at the terminal; agree the fare first.
  • Shuttle/bus — information conflicts between sources; check locally.

Allow about an hour; at peak times traffic into Ulaanbaatar can double that.

At the airport

  • ATMs and exchange counters for tögrög.
  • Mobile operator counters for SIM cards.
  • If your countryside trip starts the next morning, arrange money and SIM on arrival.

Departure timing

Leave the city with plenty of margin — traffic is unpredictable. Plan to be back in Ulaanbaatar the day before your international flight after a countryside trip.

Questions travelers ask

How much is a taxi from Ulaanbaatar airport?

Recent guides quote widely different figures, so agree the fare before getting in or book a transfer in advance. Pre-booked transfers were advertised from about US$20 in 2026.

Is there a bus from the airport to the city?

Sources conflict: one reports the public bus stopped in 2022, others describe routes and shuttles. Check the current situation on arrival or with your hotel; don't depend on it late at night.
