Mongolia Visa and Entry Requirements

Short answer

Many travelers don't need a visa for short tourist stays. Mongolia's visa exemption for citizens of 34 countries (mostly European, plus Australia and New Zealand) allows tourist stays of up to 30 days and has been extended until 1 January 2027. US citizens have long had visa-free entry for up to 90 days, and several other countries have their own agreements. Others can apply for an e-visa. Stays over 30 days require registration with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival. Always confirm for your passport before you book.

Entry rules change, and Mongolia has changed its visa policy several times in recent years. Here’s the current picture as of our last check — then verify for your own passport.

The 34-country visa exemption

Introduced in 2023 as a temporary measure and extended since, Mongolia’s exemption lets ordinary-passport holders from 34 countries visit for tourism for up to 30 days without a visa. Reporting from the end of 2025 says it has been extended until 1 January 2027. The list is mostly European countries plus Australia and New Zealand.

Other visa-free nationalities

Several countries have separate, longer-standing agreements — for example, US citizens have had visa-free entry for up to 90 days. Terms vary by nationality and purpose. Check the official sources below.

E-visa

Most other nationalities can apply online for a Mongolian e-visa via the official portal, evisa.mn. Apply well ahead of travel.

Staying longer than 30 days

You must register with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival. Hosts or accommodation providers may register you online; confirm who is responsible.

Border-zone permits

Some areas near international borders — including much of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park — require a separate border-zone permit, usually arranged by a local operator. See Altai.

Before you book

Check: your passport’s validity (commonly 6 months is advised), the current visa-free list, and your government’s travel advice.

Questions travelers ask

Is the Netherlands / UK / Germany on the visa-free list?

Published reporting on the 34-country extension lists the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, the Nordic countries and most EU members among others; Germany has a separate visa-free arrangement. Check the official list for your passport — we don't want you relying on our summary for a border crossing.

What happens after 1 January 2027?

The 34-country exemption is a temporary measure that has been extended before. If you're travelling in 2027, check whether it has been extended again before you book.

Do I need to register on arrival?

Only if staying more than 30 days. Then you (or your host/accommodation) must register with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival; failing to do so can result in fines and delays on departure.
