Western Mongolia: Altai Mountains, Kazakh Culture and Eagle Hunters
Short answer
Western Mongolia is the country's high, remote frontier: the Altai mountains, glaciers and lakes, and Bayan-Ölgii's Kazakh communities known for hunting with golden eagles. Almost everyone flies from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii or Khovd (≈ 2 h) rather than drive (2–3+ days). Plan at least 6–8 days on the ground. Best June–September; the Golden Eagle Festival is in early October.

- Bayan-Ölgii — the Altai’s highest peaks, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, Kazakh eagle-hunter communities, Ölgii town.
- Khovd — a mixed-ethnicity province with mountains, lakes and the Khar Us Nuur wetlands.
- Uvs — Uvs Lake basin, a UNESCO-listed landscape of lakes, dunes and mountains in the far northwest.

Getting there and around
Fly to Ölgii or Khovd from Ulaanbaatar. From there you travel with a local driver and 4x4 or UAZ van. Roads are mostly unpaved and distances between sights are long. Choose a local team based in the west — they know the routes, families and permit procedures.
Permits
Travel near the border, including most of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, requires a border-zone permit and a park entry fee. In practice these are usually arranged by a local operator; independent travelers report mixed experiences obtaining permits directly in Ölgii. Allow time and confirm current requirements before you go.
When to go
June to September for trekking and camping. Snow can arrive early at altitude. Early October for the eagle festival — cold, especially at night. Winter trips to see eagle hunting in action are specialist expeditions.
Who it suits
Hikers, trekkers, photographers, horse riders and travelers fascinated by Kazakh culture — people who have at least a week and don’t mind basic conditions and remote travel. It’s the least suitable region for travelers who need comfort and short drives.
Questions travelers ask
Do I need to fly to Western Mongolia?
Practically, yes, unless the overland journey is the point of your trip. The road from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii is roughly 1,600 km and takes two to three long days or more. Flights take around two hours but run less often than on other routes, so book early.
When is the Golden Eagle Festival?
Traditionally the first weekend of October near Ölgii; in 2026 sources listed 3–4 October. A smaller Sagsai festival is held in mid-September. Dates should always be confirmed for the year you travel.
Is Western Mongolia good for a first trip?
It can be, if mountains and Kazakh culture are your priority and you have at least a week. For a first trip with limited time, Central Mongolia or the Gobi are easier logistically.
