Driving Distances and Times in Mongolia
Short answer
Main paved routes are reasonably quick: Ulaanbaatar–Kharkhorin ≈ 360 km (5–6 h), Ulaanbaatar–Dalanzadgad ≈ 550–590 km (7–9 h). Off the pavement, 150–250 km can take 4–7 hours. Khövsgöl is two long days by road (or a flight plus ≈ 100 km), and Ölgii in the west is ≈ 1,600 km — 2–3+ days, so most people fly.

Distances and times are approximate, from published sources and typical operator itineraries. Real times depend on vehicle, weather, road works and stops. “—” means we haven’t found a reliable published distance.
Why journeys take longer than expected
- Tracks, not roads: once you leave the pavement, speeds drop to 20–50 km/h.
- Multiple diverging tracks: drivers choose by condition.
- Weather: rain makes tracks muddy and rivers higher.
- Stops: herder gers, fuel, lunch, photos, livestock on the road.
- Road works: paving projects create detours.
Flights that save days
Domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad (Gobi), Mörön (Khövsgöl), Ölgii and Khovd (west) can save one to three days each way. Schedules change; book early in summer.
Questions travelers ask
Why do Google Maps times seem too short?
Mapping apps often don't know which tracks are passable, can't account for surface conditions, and miss the many stops a countryside drive involves. Local drivers' estimates are more reliable.
How many hours a day is reasonable to drive?
For most travelers, 4–6 hours is comfortable; occasional 7–9 hour days are tolerable. Back-to-back long days wear people out. Some operators cap drivers at 8–10 hours a day.
