First-time visitors who want desert, Photographers, Adventurous families

This is the Gobi trip most people imagine: an overland loop with the big sights of the south, a full day at the dunes and the slow change from steppe to desert and back.

Honest about the driving

Days 1 and 6 are long. Days 2, 3 and 5 are half days of track driving. Over the week you’ll spend roughly 30–35 hours in the vehicle. Breaks at herder gers, wells and viewpoints make it part of the experience, but it’s still a lot — this is why the vehicle matters. See Land Cruiser vs furgon.

Ways to make it easier

  • Fly one way (back from Dalanzadgad) — saves days 6–7. See 5-day Gobi.
  • Add a day (8 days) and split the long return.
  • Choose camps with good bathrooms — after a long day it matters.

Who should run it

A driver who knows the Gobi tracks is essential; a guide or driver-guide adds interpretation and herder connections. Do you need a guide?

Questions travelers ask

Is 7 days too long for the Gobi?

No — it's the comfortable length for a road trip. Shorter means longer drives each day; longer lets you add Ongi or more nights.

Can I swap Baga Gazriin Chuluu for Ongi?

Yes. Ongi (monastery ruins on a river) is a common alternative, especially if you continue into Central Mongolia.
