Itinerary

5-Day Gobi Trip (Flying In and Out)

Short answer

Five days is enough for the Gobi's highlights only if you fly: Ulaanbaatar → Dalanzadgad by air, then Yolyn Am, two nights at the Khongoryn Els dunes and Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), and fly back from Dalanzadgad. By road, 5 days means very long drives every day — 6–7 days is the better road-trip minimum.

Short trips, Photographers, Travelers who dislike long drives

This is the Gobi for travelers with limited time who don’t want to spend it on the paved road between Ulaanbaatar and the desert. You trade some cost (flights) for time and comfort.

How it works

The driver and vehicle drive down from Ulaanbaatar to meet you at Dalanzadgad — that’s a day each way for them, which is usually built into the price. You fly both ways and spend your days in the desert.

Trade-offs

  • Cost: flights for each traveler, plus the crew’s positioning days.
  • Flight dependence: domestic schedules change by season and year, and delays happen. Keep a buffer day before your international flight.
  • Fewer stops: no Tsagaan Suvarga or Ongi.

Making it better

  • Fly one way only and drive back via Tsagaan Suvarga (6 days).
  • Add a second night at Bayanzag for photography.
  • Add a herder-family night near the dunes.

Questions travelers ask

How much does flying to the Gobi add?

Domestic round-trip flights were published at roughly US$150–450 per person in 2026, depending on route and season. You still pay for the driver and vehicle, including their drive to and from the Gobi.

Can I do this route by road in 5 days?

It's possible but means 6–9 hour drives on days 1 and 5 (and long days in between). We'd suggest 6–7 days by road.
