Older travelers
Mongolia for Older Travelers: Comfort, Pace and Practicalities
Short answer
Many older travelers have wonderful trips in Mongolia. The keys are comfort and pacing: a smooth vehicle, shorter driving days, camps with good beds and ensuite or reliable bathrooms, two-night stays, and a guide. Consider flying to the Gobi or Khövsgöl to cut road time. Medical care outside Ulaanbaatar is limited, so travel insurance with evacuation cover and a frank look at health needs are essential.
Age is less of a factor in Mongolia than comfort and health. A well-designed trip removes most of the friction.
What to prioritise
- Vehicle comfort. A Land Cruiser–type 4x4 is much smoother than a UAZ van. See vehicle comparison.
- Shorter days. Aim for 4–5 hours of driving maximum; use flights to the Gobi or Khövsgöl.
- Bathrooms. Choose camps with ensuite gers or good shared blocks; ask specifically for each night.
- Beds. Some camps have proper beds and mattresses; others have narrow, hard ones.
- Two-night stays to rest and avoid daily packing.
- A guide to smooth everything.
Health and medical access
- Talk to your doctor about the trip, particularly heart and lung conditions, mobility and medication.
- Bring enough medication plus spare, in hand luggage.
- Ulaanbaatar’s winter air pollution is a significant issue for respiratory conditions.
- Khövsgöl sits at about 1,645 m — not high, but nights are cold.
- Make sure your travel insurance covers evacuation and your age.

Questions travelers ask
Is Mongolia too hard for older travelers?
Not if the trip is designed for comfort. The hardest parts — long bumpy drives and basic bathrooms — can be reduced with flights, shorter days, a good vehicle and carefully chosen camps.
How good is medical care in Mongolia?
Ulaanbaatar has hospitals and international clinics; in the countryside facilities are basic and distances long. Serious problems usually mean evacuation to Ulaanbaatar or abroad. Insurance with evacuation cover is essential.
Are there steps or difficult walking at the main sights?
Most sights involve short walks on uneven ground. Climbing the dunes at Khongoryn Els is strenuous; Tövkhön Monastery is a steep walk (or horse ride). You can enjoy every region without the hardest walks.
