Terelj: Mongolia's Easiest Escape from Ulaanbaatar
Short answer
Terelj (Gorkhi-Terelj National Park) is the closest proper countryside to Ulaanbaatar — about 1.5–2 hours' drive. It's ideal for a day trip or 1–2 nights in a ger camp with easy horse riding and hiking, especially on a short trip or at the start or end of a longer one. The main valley is developed and busy in summer; it's a gentle introduction rather than remote Mongolia.

If you have only a few days in Mongolia, or arrive tired and want something gentle before the long drives, Terelj is the obvious choice. It’s part of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, northeast of the capital.
What it’s like
Granite rock formations (the best known is Turtle Rock), forested slopes, the Terelj river and dozens of ger camps. The Aryabal Meditation Temple sits up a hillside walk with a valley view. The main valley is the busiest; it gets quieter and wilder the further in you go.
On the way, many travelers stop at the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue at Tsonjin Boldog — a 40 m stainless-steel statue with a viewing platform in the horse’s head.
What it’s good for
- A day trip or overnight on a short visit.
- A first night in a ger close to the city.
- Easy horse riding for beginners and children.
- Hiking without needing a vehicle for the day.
- A winter taste of the countryside — some camps operate year-round.
Honest limitations
The main valley is developed and on summer weekends busy with visitors from Ulaanbaatar. It’s not where you’ll feel the emptiness of the steppe. If that’s what you want, go further: Central Mongolia or beyond.
Getting there
By private car or with a driver, 1.5–2 hours depending on Ulaanbaatar traffic. Some camps offer transfers. Public buses exist but are not convenient for most visitors.
Questions travelers ask
Is Terelj worth it?
For a short trip or a first taste of the countryside, yes. If you have a week or more, treat it as an add-on — it's more developed than most of rural Mongolia.
Can I do Terelj as a day trip?
Yes. Leave Ulaanbaatar early to avoid traffic, combine with the Chinggis Khaan statue, and you'll have time for a short ride or walk. An overnight in a ger camp is more relaxed and lets you see the valley at dusk and dawn.
Can I ride a horse in Terelj?
Easily. Rides from an hour to a full day are arranged by camps and local horsemen. Multi-day treks to the Khagiin Khar lake area and beyond are possible with proper organisation.
