Best Time to Visit Mongolia (Month by Month)

Short answer

June to September is the best time for most travelers: warm days, green landscapes, all ger camps open. July is the busiest and most expensive month because of Naadam (from 11 July). Late May, early June and September are quieter with colder nights. Early October suits the eagle festival in the west; winter (November–March) is for prepared, specialist trips.

Mongolia has an extreme continental climate: short warm summers, long very cold winters, big swings between day and night. Timing shapes your trip more than in most countries.

Temperature context

Ulaanbaatar’s monthly averages range from roughly −20 °C in January to the high teens °C in July, and the countryside can be colder at night. Summer days in the Gobi can be hot; nights everywhere can be cold. Always pack layers: what to pack.

Questions travelers ask

What is the best month to visit Mongolia?

For most people, late June to early September. If you want fewer people and don't mind cold nights, September is excellent. If you want Naadam, it's July.

When is the rainy season in Mongolia?

Most of Mongolia's limited rainfall comes in summer, especially July and August, usually as afternoon or evening showers and storms. Khövsgöl and the north are wetter than the Gobi.

Is May a good time to visit Mongolia?

Late May can be good for the Gobi, but it's often windy and dusty, the steppe is still brown, nights are cold and some camps haven't opened. It's a shoulder-season choice.
