What to Pack for Mongolia
Short answer
Pack for big temperature swings: layers, a warm jacket and hat even in summer, sun protection, sturdy shoes, a headlamp, power bank, wet wipes and toilet paper, a basic first-aid kit and any medication. Soft bags are easier than hard suitcases in vehicles. Winter needs serious cold-weather gear rated well below −30 °C.
Summer essentials (June–September)
Clothing
- Layers: T-shirts, long-sleeve tops, fleece or light down.
- Warm jacket and hat — nights can be near freezing, especially at altitude and in the north.
- Waterproof jacket.
- Long trousers (riding, sun, insects).
- Comfortable walking shoes or light boots; sandals for camps.
- Sun hat, sunglasses, buff/scarf for dust.
Ger-camp kit
- Headlamp.
- Power bank (or two) and a car charger.
- Wet wipes, hand sanitiser, toilet paper.
- Quick-dry towel.
- Earplugs.
- Refillable water bottle.
Health
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.
- Personal medicines (plus spare).
- Basic first-aid kit, rehydration salts, motion-sickness tablets.
- Insect repellent (summer, especially near lakes).
Activities
- Riding: long trousers, helmet if you have one, gloves.
- Photography: dust protection, spare batteries.
Winter additions (November–March)
- Down jacket and insulated trousers rated for extreme cold.
- Insulated boots, thick socks, layered gloves/mittens, face protection.
- Thermal base layers.
- Keep electronics warm; batteries drain quickly.
Luggage
Soft bags fit vehicles better. Check domestic flight baggage limits if flying to the Gobi, Khövsgöl or the west.
Questions travelers ask
Do I need a sleeping bag for Mongolia?
Not usually for ger camps (bedding is provided). For camping, horse treks or herder stays, yes — a bag comfortable to around freezing in summer.
Should I bring a hard suitcase?
Soft bags are easier to pack into vehicles and lighter on domestic flights, which can have stricter baggage limits.
