Toilets, Showers and Comfort on a Mongolia Trip

Short answer

Bathrooms are the comfort issue travelers ask about most. Tourist ger camps usually have shared flush toilets and hot showers (sometimes at set hours); better camps have ensuite gers. Herder homestays and many roadside stops have only pit toilets or none — on the road you'll often use the open steppe. You can plan around this: choose camps carefully, ask about each night's facilities, and pack wipes, sanitiser and toilet paper.

We’d rather you know this before you book than discover it on day two.

On the road

Long drives mean steppe stops. It’s normal, and drivers are used to it — ask to stop whenever you need. Women often bring a long skirt or poncho for privacy. Pack out paper and waste.

Making it comfortable

  • Ask for ensuite gers on long-drive nights.
  • Mix basic nights with comfortable ones.
  • Pack wipes, sanitiser, toilet paper, a headlamp and a small waste bag.
  • Tell us if bathrooms are a deal-breaker — we’ll design around it.

Questions travelers ask

Are there toilets on the road in Mongolia?

Rarely between towns. Drivers stop when asked; you'll use the steppe, a cafe in a soum centre, or a fuel station. Pack toilet paper, a small bag for waste, wipes and sanitiser.

Can I shower every day?

At most tourist camps, yes, though hot water may be limited to certain hours. On camping trips, homestays or remote routes, not every day.
