Comparison
Gobi vs Khövsgöl: Which Should You Choose?
Short answer
Choose the Gobi for desert landscapes, dunes, camels and a roaming road trip — with a lot of driving. Choose Khövsgöl for a vast lake, forest, riding and hiking from one base, with less driving (if you fly to Mörön) and cooler weather. With under 10 days, pick one; with 14+ days and a flight, you can do both.
These are the two regions people most often weigh against each other. They’re almost opposites.

Doing both
The realistic way is about two weeks with a flight: Gobi first by road or air, then Central Mongolia, then Khövsgöl with a flight back from Mörön. See 14 days in Mongolia and 10 days: Central + Khövsgöl.
Questions travelers ask
Which is better for a first trip, Gobi or Khövsgöl?
Most first-timers choose the Gobi because it's the iconic image. But if you dislike long drives or want riding and hiking, Khövsgöl may suit you better. Neither is objectively better.
Which is better in July?
Both are in season. The Gobi can be hot by day; Khövsgöl is cooler and wetter. July is busy everywhere because of Naadam.
Can I see the Gobi and Khövsgöl in one trip?
Yes, with about two weeks and at least one domestic flight. In 7–10 days by road, it's too much driving.
