Comparison

Khövsgöl vs Central Mongolia: Lake or Valleys?

Short answer

Both are green, horse-friendly and cooler than the Gobi. Central Mongolia has more variety (wild horses, dunes, Kharkhorin, monasteries, hot springs) and is reachable by road from Ulaanbaatar in hours. Khövsgöl is one spectacular landscape — a vast lake in forest — best reached by flying to Mörön, and suits staying put for riding, hiking and boating. With 10 days, combine them overland and fly back from Mörön.

Questions travelers ask

Which is better for horse riding?

Both are excellent. The Orkhon Valley offers easy access and varied riding; Khövsgöl adds lake-shore and forest trails and multi-day treks into the mountains.

Which is better for a short trip?

Central Mongolia by road (5–7 days), or Khövsgöl by air (5–6 days). Driving to Khövsgöl and back for a short trip uses too many days.
