Orkhon Valley: Waterfall, Monasteries and Horse Country

Short answer

The Orkhon Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape stretching along the Orkhon River southwest of Kharkhorin. Travelers come for the Orkhon Waterfall, the hilltop Tövkhön Monastery, herder families and horse riding. It's usually a 2–3 night stop on a Central Mongolia loop; access tracks are rough, so a 4x4 and an experienced driver matter.

The Orkhon River has been a centre of steppe empires for well over a thousand years — Turkic, Uyghur and Mongol capitals all stood in or near this valley. UNESCO lists the whole landscape for that reason. For a traveler today, it’s simply one of the most beautiful and accessible places in Mongolia to slow down for a few days.

What’s here

Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan). Where the river drops into a basalt gorge in the upper valley. Its flow depends on rainfall — strongest after summer rains, sometimes a trickle in dry periods. You can scramble down into the gorge.

Tövkhön Monastery. A small hermitage on a forested ridge, associated with Zanabazar, Mongolia’s first Bogd (spiritual leader) and a celebrated sculptor. Reached by a steep walk or on horseback. A quiet, rewarding half-day.

Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu at the valley’s eastern edge — see Karakorum.

The valley itself. Wide river meadows, herder families with summer camps, yaks and horses. Many travelers find a day of riding along the river the highlight of their trip.

How to visit

Most people visit as part of a Central Mongolia loop: Ulaanbaatar → Hustai → Elsen Tasarkhai → Kharkhorin → Orkhon Valley (2 nights) → Tsenkher hot springs → back to UB. Spending two nights in the valley lets you have one full day without driving.

Staying

There are tourist ger camps in the upper valley, from basic to comfortable, and herder-family homestays. Camps near the waterfall can fill in July. Facilities are simpler than in the hot-springs camps of Arkhangai — check bathroom arrangements.

Riding in the Orkhon Valley

The valley is one of the easiest places in Mongolia to arrange riding, from a two-hour outing to a multi-day trek with a horseman, pack horses and camping. For anything longer than a day, experience matters and so does the organisation behind it — see horse trekking in Mongolia.

When to go

June to September. Late July and August usually bring the most water to the waterfall and the greenest valley, but also more rain and occasional muddy tracks. September is quieter, with autumn colours and cold nights.

Questions travelers ask

Is the Orkhon Waterfall worth the drive?

It's worth it as part of the valley, not on its own. The waterfall itself is modest in size and can be low in dry spells; the reason to go is the whole upper valley — riding, camping by the river, Tövkhön and the drive itself.

Can I ride horses in the Orkhon Valley as a beginner?

Yes. Short guided rides of 1–3 hours with local horsemen are easy to arrange and suit beginners. Multi-day treks need some riding experience and a properly organised horseman team.

How rough is the road to the Orkhon Waterfall?

Beyond the paved road the route is dirt track, rocky in places and sometimes muddy or affected by river levels after rain. It's routine for experienced local drivers in 4x4s or UAZ vans, but slow.
