Arkhangai: Hot Springs, Volcanoes and Green Valleys
Short answer
Arkhangai is the green, hilly province west of the Orkhon Valley, known for Tsenkher hot springs, the town of Tsetserleg, and the volcanic landscape around Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and Khorgo. It's the natural extension of a Central Mongolia trip and the overland link towards Khövsgöl. Allow 2–4 nights; best June–September.

Arkhangai (“North Khangai”) is where Central Mongolia gets greener and more mountainous. It’s yak country, with river valleys, forested slopes and volcanic landscapes.
Main places
Tsenkher Hot Springs. Several camps around natural hot springs in a forested valley. Outdoor pools, often open late. A favourite rest stop on Central Mongolia loops.
Tsetserleg. A pleasant provincial capital at the foot of a mountain, with the Zayain Gegeenii Süm monastery museum and a small, active temple above town. Good for supplies and a break from camps.
Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (“White Lake”). A freshwater lake formed by lava flows, with camps along the shore, good birdlife and riding.
Khorgo volcano. An extinct volcano beside the lake; a short, steep walk to the crater rim gives views over the lava field.
Chuluut river gorge and other stops along the main road west.
How it fits a trip
- Central loop: Kharkhorin → Orkhon Valley → Tsenkher → back to Ulaanbaatar (7 days).
- Towards Khövsgöl: Tsenkher → Terkhiin Tsagaan → Khövsgöl, flying back from Mörön (10 days).
- Long loop: as part of a 14-day Gobi + Central trip.
Driving
Main roads towards Tsetserleg and Terkhiin Tsagaan have been increasingly paved, but side trips and connections north are unpaved. Distances are long; allow a full day between Orkhon Valley and Terkhiin Tsagaan if you stop at Tsenkher.
Questions travelers ask
Are the Tsenkher hot springs worth it?
For most travelers, yes — especially after several days of driving. Camps pipe natural hot water into outdoor pools; an evening soak under the stars is a highlight for many.
How do I combine Arkhangai with Khövsgöl?
From Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, the route north to Khövsgöl takes about two days with an overnight en route. Flying back to Ulaanbaatar from Mörön avoids the long return drive.
