Itinerary

10 Days: Gobi Desert and Central Mongolia Overland

Short answer

Ten days is the minimum for combining the Gobi and Central Mongolia by road: Ulaanbaatar → Tsagaan Suvarga → Yolyn Am → Khongoryn Els (2 nights) → Bayanzag → Ongi → Kharkhorin → Hustai → Ulaanbaatar. Driving is heavy — six long days — but you see desert, steppe and Mongolia's historic heart. Add 2 days for the Orkhon Valley.

This is the trip we’re asked about most: “I want to see the Gobi and the green Mongolia.” Ten days makes it possible by road, but it’s honest to call it a road trip.

What you gain

The full contrast: desert, badlands and dunes in the south; the river at Ongi; the historic heart at Kharkhorin; steppe and wild horses at Hustai.

What you give up

  • Rest: only one full day without driving.
  • The Orkhon Valley — add two days to include it (Kharkhorin → Orkhon Valley → back).
  • Time with families — tight days leave less room for unplanned stops.

Making it work

  • A comfortable vehicle with space for 2–4 people (see vehicle comparison).
  • Good camps on the long-day nights.
  • An experienced driver who knows the Ongi–Kharkhorin connection.

If you prefer fewer hours on the road, consider Gobi only (7 days) or Central Mongolia + Khövsgöl.

Questions travelers ask

Is 10 days enough for Gobi and Central Mongolia?

It's enough to see the highlights of both, with a lot of driving. With 12 days you can add the Orkhon Valley and slow down.

Can I reduce the driving?

Fly one way to Dalanzadgad (saves about a day), or drop Tsagaan Suvarga. The 14-day itinerary shows a flight-assisted version with more rest.
