Private Gobi Tours: Planning Your Own Desert Trip
Short answer
A private Gobi tour is usually a 5–8 day loop from Ulaanbaatar with your own driver (and often a guide) in a 4x4 or van, staying in ger camps near Tsagaan Suvarga, Yolyn Am, Khongoryn Els and the Flaming Cliffs. The key decisions are: how many days, whether to fly one way to Dalanzadgad, which vehicle, and whether you want a separate English-speaking guide.
Key facts
- Classic stops
- Tsagaan Suvarga → Yolyn Am → Khongoryn Els → Bayanzag → (Ongi)
- Driving
- 3–5 heavy days on a road loop; fly one way to save ≈ 2 days
- Vehicle
- Land Cruiser–type 4x4 for comfort; UAZ furgon for groups/budget
- Nights at the dunes
- 2 recommended
The Gobi is the most-requested region for private trips and the one where planning choices make the biggest difference to how the trip feels. For background on the region itself, see our Gobi Desert guide.
The four decisions that shape a Gobi trip
1. Number of days
- 5 days — possible, but either fly one way or accept long drives every day. See 5-day Gobi.
- 6–7 days — the classic loop at a reasonable pace. See 7-day Gobi.
- 8+ days — adds Baga Gazriin Chuluu, Ongi, or a continuation into Central Mongolia (10-day Gobi + Central).
2. Fly or drive
The stretch between Ulaanbaatar and the Gobi is the least interesting part of the trip. Flying one way to Dalanzadgad shortens the trip by about two days. Driving both ways keeps the cost down and lets you see the transition from steppe to desert.
3. Vehicle
A Land Cruiser–type 4x4 is more comfortable for 2–3 people; a Russian UAZ furgon has more space for 4–6 and is easy to repair anywhere, but is louder and bumpier. A Delica or Starex van sits in between. See Land Cruiser vs furgon.
4. Guide or no guide
A driver gets you there. A guide explains what you’re seeing, interprets with herders and handles camps. A driver-guide does both, to a varying degree. See driver vs guide.
What to ask any operator before booking a Gobi trip
- How many hours of driving is each day, realistically?
- What vehicle, how old, how many seats — and how many people will be in it including crew?
- Which camps, and what are the bathroom arrangements at each?
- Is fuel included? Are the crew’s meals and beds included?
- Are camel rides and park fees included?
- What happens if the vehicle breaks down?
- Has this driver done this route recently?
Costs
A local operator’s 6-day Gobi package was published from about US$1,500–1,550 per person (with a group, basic shared ger stays). A fully private trip for two typically costs more per person because you carry the full vehicle and crew cost. For the cost building blocks, see Mongolia private tour cost. Prices vary based on itinerary and supplier.
Questions travelers ask
How many days do I need for a private Gobi tour?
Seven days is the comfortable road-trip length. Six is fine with one or two long days. Five is tight by road — consider flying one way.
Should I fly to the Gobi?
If time is short or long drives are hard for you, flying Ulaanbaatar–Dalanzadgad one way saves roughly two days of mostly paved driving. Your driver drives down to meet you, so the vehicle cost doesn't disappear.
Do I need a guide as well as a driver in the Gobi?
Not necessarily. Many Gobi drivers know the route well. A guide adds interpretation, cultural context and smoother herder visits. If no one in your party speaks Mongolian or Russian, a guide or English-speaking driver-guide makes a real difference.
