How Much Does a Private Gobi Tour Cost?

Short answer

A private Gobi trip is priced like any Mongolia trip — days × (driver + vehicle + guide) + fuel + camps + activities — but fuel and distance weigh more: a classic 7-day loop covers very roughly 1,500–2,000 km. Published 2026 reference points: a local operator's 6-day Gobi group package from about US$1,500 per person; driver with vehicle ≈ US$85–120/day plus fuel; guide ≈ US$65–100/day. For two travelers privately, expect a higher per-person cost than a group package; for four, it drops sharply.

The Gobi is the most-requested trip and the one where quotes vary most. Here’s how to understand the price.

What you’re paying for

Component Gobi-specific notes
Driver + vehicle 6–8 days typical; add positioning days if you fly
Fuel Larger share than in Central Mongolia — long distances on tracks
Guide (optional) Adds a daily fee and a seat
Ger camps Near Yolyn Am, Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag; standards vary a lot
Meals Usually at camps
Activities & fees Camel rides, park fees (Gobi Gurvansaikhan)
Flights (optional) Ulaanbaatar ↔ Dalanzadgad

A rough fuel illustration

Our illustration, not a quote: a classic 7-day loop (Ulaanbaatar → Tsagaan Suvarga → Yolyn Am → Khongoryn Els → Bayanzag → back north) is very roughly 1,500–2,000 km. At the 17–20 L/100 km one operator lists for Land Cruiser–type vehicles, a 1,600 km loop needs about 270–320 litres — three to four full tanks at the published ≈ 350,000 MNT per tank. Vans and furgons differ. Always ask for a route-specific estimate.

Why two people pay more each

Driver, vehicle, guide and fuel are shared costs. Two travelers each carry half; four carry a quarter. That’s why private Gobi trips for couples cost noticeably more per person than group packages — and why sharing a vehicle with friends is the biggest saving.

How to compare Gobi quotes

Ask each operator: days and nights, vehicle model, guide or not, every camp and its bathrooms, whether fuel and crew costs are included, camel rides and park fees, and what happens if the vehicle breaks down. See private tour cost.

Prices vary based on itinerary and supplier. Figures above are third-party published prices, not Mongolia Relay quotes.

Questions travelers ask

Is it cheaper to fly or drive to the Gobi?

Driving is cheaper. Flying adds tickets for each traveler, while the driver still drives the vehicle down to meet you. Flying saves time, not money.

How much fuel does a Gobi trip use?

It depends on the route and vehicle. As a rough illustration only: a 1,600 km loop in a vehicle using 17–20 L per 100 km needs around 270–320 litres — roughly three to four full tanks of a large 4x4 at the published ≈ 350,000 MNT per tank. Ask your driver for a route-specific estimate.

Are camel rides included?

On many packages, a short camel ride at Khongoryn Els is included; on private trips, ask. Longer rides or multi-day camel treks cost extra.
