How Much Does a Driver Cost in Mongolia?

Short answer

Published 2026 rates for a driver with vehicle in Mongolia range from about 300,000 MNT (≈ US$84) to around US$120 per day depending on the vehicle. Fuel is usually extra (≈ 300,000–350,000 MNT per full tank), and in the countryside travelers typically cover the driver's meals and bed. An English-speaking guide adds roughly US$65–100 per day.

The driver-and-vehicle day rate is the core of almost every Mongolia trip budget. Here’s what’s published, and what to watch out for.

What’s typically included — and not

Usually included: the driver’s time, the vehicle, basic maintenance.

Often extra: fuel; the driver’s meals and accommodation in the countryside; park fees; road tolls; parking; positioning days.

One operator’s rate sheet also notes drivers drive a maximum of 8–10 hours per day — sensible, and worth agreeing explicitly.

A simple way to estimate

  1. Days the driver is working (including any positioning days).
  2. × day rate for your vehicle.
    • fuel — ask the driver to estimate tanks for your route.
    • driver’s meals and beds — ask camps for crew rates.
    • guide, if you want one.

Driver vs self-drive on cost

Self-drive rentals are often more expensive per day than a driver with vehicle, and add deposit, insurance and risk. See self-drive vs driver.

Questions travelers ask

Is fuel included in a Mongolian driver's day rate?

Often not. Many rate sheets explicitly exclude fuel, and the driver's meals and lodging in the countryside. Some drivers quote all-inclusive daily prices. Always confirm in writing.

Do I pay for days the driver travels without me?

Usually yes — for example, when the driver drives to the Gobi to meet your flight to Dalanzadgad, or drives back from Mörön after you fly. Ask how positioning days are charged.

Should I tip my driver?

Tipping drivers and guides at the end of a trip is common for international travelers in Mongolia. Amounts are personal; good service over a long trip is usually recognised with a meaningful tip.
