Self-Drive vs Hiring a Driver in Mongolia

Short answer

Self-driving Mongolia is possible and legal with an International Driving Permit and your home licence, and rewarding for experienced off-road drivers. But self-drive rentals often cost as much or more per day than a driver with a vehicle, and you take on navigation, breakdowns, river crossings, fuel planning and language. For most visitors, a driver is cheaper, safer and less stressful; self-drive makes most sense on paved routes or for experienced overlanders.

When self-drive makes sense

  • You have real off-road and remote-travel experience and some mechanical skills.
  • You’re sticking mostly to paved roads.
  • You want the adventure of navigating yourself and accept the risks.

When a driver makes more sense

  • It’s your first Mongolia trip.
  • Your route goes into the Gobi tracks, Orkhon Valley or the west.
  • You don’t speak Russian or Mongolian.
  • You want to enjoy the landscape rather than watch the track.

Questions travelers ask

Is it cheaper to self-drive in Mongolia?

Often not. Published 2026 rates show self-drive 4x4s from about US$110–130/day in the west and around US$250/day from Ulaanbaatar plus deposit and insurance, while a driver with vehicle is roughly US$85–120/day plus fuel and the driver's costs.

Where is self-driving realistic?

Paved roads — Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin, to Dalanzadgad, towards Tsetserleg — are straightforward for confident drivers. Tracks in the Gobi, Orkhon Valley, Khövsgöl's eastern shore and the west are where local knowledge matters most.
