Hiring a Private Driver (or Driver-Guide) in Mongolia
Short answer
Hiring a driver with a vehicle is the most flexible way to see Mongolia without a full tour. Published 2026 rates are roughly US$85–120 per day for driver + vehicle, plus fuel and the driver's meals and lodging on the road. Many drivers speak little English; a driver-guide (who speaks English and helps organise) costs more but makes the trip far smoother. Agree inclusions, daily hours and route in writing.
Key facts
- Driver + vehicle
- ≈ 300,000 MNT (≈ US$84) to ≈ US$120 per day, excl. fuel
- Fuel
- ≈ 300,000–350,000 MNT per full tank (several tanks on long trips)
- Driver's costs
- Traveler usually covers driver's meals and bed in the countryside
- Driving hours
- Commonly capped around 8–10 h/day
For many travelers, a driver with a good vehicle is the trip. You choose the route; the driver makes it possible. This page covers how that works in practice.
Three ways to have a driver
- Driver only. Cheapest; you handle accommodation choices and communication (often with a translation app). Works best for travelers comfortable with uncertainty, or with some Russian or Mongolian.
- Driver-guide. One person who drives and speaks your language. Simpler and cheaper than two crew; quality varies widely — some are excellent guides, others are drivers with basic English.
- Driver + separate guide. The full private-tour setup. Best interpretation and organisation; costs more and takes a seat in the vehicle.
What the day rate usually covers
The headline rate typically covers the driver’s time and the vehicle. Separately you usually pay for:
- Fuel — the biggest variable. Long-route trips use several full tanks at ≈ 300,000–350,000 MNT each.
- The driver’s meals and bed in the countryside (often at reduced crew rates at camps).
- Park fees, road tolls, parking.
Some drivers and operators quote an all-in daily price including fuel. Fine — just make sure you’re comparing like for like. Details: Mongolia driver cost.
Vehicles
| Vehicle | Typical seats | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Land Cruiser / Lexus 4x4 | 3–4 passengers | Most comfortable, good on rough tracks |
| Mitsubishi Delica / Hyundai Starex | 4–6 | Middle ground, more space |
| UAZ 452 “furgon” | 5–7 | Basic, tough, easy to fix, bumpy and loud |
| Toyota Prius / sedan | 3 | Fine on paved roads only |
Agree these things in writing
- Route and number of days; what happens if you change plans.
- Daily price and exactly what it includes.
- Who pays for fuel, and how (receipts or fixed estimate).
- Driver’s meals and lodging.
- Maximum driving hours per day.
- Payment schedule.
- Vehicle breakdown plan.
Driver vs self-drive
Self-driving is possible in Mongolia, but for most visitors a driver is cheaper, safer and less stressful — rental cars often cost more per day than a driver with a vehicle. See self-drive vs driver and self-driving Mongolia.

Questions travelers ask
How much does a private driver cost in Mongolia?
Published 2026 figures put a driver with vehicle at roughly 300,000 MNT (≈ US$84) to about US$120 per day depending on vehicle, plus fuel and the driver's meals and lodging in the countryside. See our driver cost page for the details and sources.
Do Mongolian drivers speak English?
Many do not, or only a little. Some drivers speak Russian. If no one in your group speaks Mongolian or Russian, budget for a guide or an English-speaking driver-guide — or be prepared for a lot of pointing and translation apps.
What's the difference between a driver and a driver-guide?
A driver drives, navigates and maintains the vehicle. A driver-guide also communicates in your language, explains places, organises camps and helps with herder visits. Driver-guides are fewer and cost more. See our driver vs guide comparison.
Is it safe to hire a driver I found online?
Usually, but you have little to go on. Check reviews across more than one platform, have a call, ask for photos of the actual vehicle, agree everything in writing and avoid paying large sums upfront to individuals you can't verify.
