Comparison

Land Cruiser vs UAZ Furgon (and Vans): Which Vehicle for Mongolia?

Short answer

A Land Cruiser–type 4x4 is the comfortable choice for 2–3 travelers on long trips: smoother, quieter, air-conditioned. The Russian UAZ 452 'furgon' van is basic, loud and bumpy but roomy for 4–6, rugged and repairable anywhere. Delica and Starex vans sit in between. Day rates are often similar; the 4x4 may use more fuel. On a 7-day Gobi loop you'll spend 25–35 hours in it — choose deliberately.

How to choose

  • Two or three travelers, long trip: Land Cruiser–type 4x4.
  • Four to six, or a family: Delica/Starex or furgon — prioritise space.
  • Budget or adventure feel: furgon; it’s also the most characterful.
  • Back problems or motion sickness: the smoothest vehicle you can get, plus shorter days.

Questions to ask about any vehicle

  • Model and year? Photos of the actual vehicle?
  • Working seatbelts for every seat?
  • How many people including crew?
  • Spare tyres, tools, recovery gear?
  • Who pays for fuel, and roughly how much for the route?

Questions travelers ask

Is the UAZ furgon safe?

It's a simple, robust design used across rural Mongolia for decades and easy to fix anywhere. It lacks modern safety features. Condition and the driver's skill matter more than the model — ask about seatbelts.

How many people fit in a Land Cruiser?

Comfortably three travelers plus the driver for a long trip, with luggage. With a guide as well, two to three travelers is realistic. Four adults plus crew and luggage is cramped.
