Mongolia Private Tour Cost: What You're Paying For

Short answer

A private Mongolia tour price is essentially days × (driver + vehicle + guide) + fuel + accommodation + meals + activities + the organiser's margin. Published 2026 reference points: driver with vehicle ≈ US$85–120/day plus fuel, guide ≈ US$65–100/day, tailor-made private trips on marketplaces from roughly US$350–430 per person per day for two. Costs per person drop sharply with 3–4 travelers.

Private tour prices in Mongolia can look wildly different for what seems like the same trip. Almost always, the difference is in the building blocks.

Why group size changes everything

On a private trip, the vehicle, driver, guide and fuel are shared costs. Illustratively, if those come to a given amount per day, two travelers each pay half and four travelers each pay a quarter — while accommodation and meals stay per person. That’s why a private trip for four can approach group-tour prices per person, and why solo private travel is the most expensive way to see Mongolia.

How to compare quotes

Ask every operator for the same itemised list:

  • Exact vehicle (model/year), driver, guide (language level).
  • Every night’s accommodation and bathroom type.
  • Which meals are included.
  • Fuel — included or extra?
  • Crew meals and beds — included or extra?
  • Activities, park fees, permits.
  • Ulaanbaatar hotels, airport transfers, domestic flights.
  • Payment schedule and cancellation terms.
  • Who is responsible if a vehicle breaks down.

A cheaper quote that excludes fuel and crew costs may end up more expensive.

How Mongolia Relay prices trips

We don’t publish a price list, because trips are custom and supplier prices change. When you ask, we design the trip with a local supplier, and your written quote shows the total price, what’s included and excluded, the payment structure (including any deposit), who operates the trip and the cancellation terms. Our fee is included in that total. See pricing & payments.

Questions travelers ask

How much is a 7-day private tour in Mongolia?

It varies too much to give one number honestly — vehicle, guide, camps, route and group size all matter. Use the building blocks on this page to sanity-check any quote, and ask for an itemised list of inclusions.

Why is a private tour for two so much more per person than for four?

Because the largest costs — vehicle, driver, guide, fuel — are per trip, not per person. Four travelers split them four ways.

Is it cheaper to book directly with a local operator?

Often, yes — intermediaries (including us) add a margin. What you pay an intermediary for is help choosing, designing the route, and having someone accountable for the introduction. Booking direct is perfectly reasonable if you're confident in your choice.
