Domestic Flights in Mongolia: When Flying Saves Your Trip
Short answer
Domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar connect to regional gateways including Dalanzadgad (Gobi), Mörön (Khövsgöl), Ölgii and Khovd (west). Airlines include MIAT, Hunnu Air and Aero Mongolia. Many tourist routes run only in summer, a few times a week, and schedules change from year to year — so book early, keep a buffer day, and expect occasional delays. Flying saves one to three days of driving each way.
Key facts
- Airlines
- MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Hunnu Air, Aero Mongolia
- Key tourist routes
- UB ↔ Dalanzadgad, Mörön, Ölgii, Khovd
- Season
- Several routes summer-only or reduced outside summer
- Indicative price
- ≈ US$150–450 round trip (published 2026 range)
Mongolia is too big to drive everywhere on a normal holiday. A domestic flight or two can turn an exhausting itinerary into a good one.
Routes travelers use most
| Destination | Gateway airport | Saves (vs road) |
|---|---|---|
| Gobi | Dalanzadgad | ≈ 1 long day each way |
| Lake Khövsgöl | Mörön (+ ≈ 100 km road) | ≈ 1.5–2 days each way |
| Western Mongolia / Altai | Ölgii or Khovd | ≈ 2–3+ days each way |
How it works with a driver
Your driver usually drives the vehicle to meet you at the regional airport, or drives back after you fly out. Those “positioning” days are normally part of the cost, so flying saves your time, not the vehicle cost. See driver costs.
Booking tips
- Book early for July (Naadam) and early October (eagle festival).
- Check the current season’s schedule — many routes run only a few days a week, and schedules are revised each year.
- Keep a buffer day in Ulaanbaatar before your international flight.
- Check baggage rules for your fare.

Questions travelers ask
Are domestic flights in Mongolia reliable?
Generally they operate, but delays, schedule changes and cancellations (weather, operational reasons) happen. Don't plan a domestic flight on the same day as your international departure.
Is it worth flying to the Gobi?
If you have under a week or dislike long drives, yes — flying one way saves about two days on the paved road. If budget matters more than time, driving is cheaper and you see the transition from steppe to desert.
What about baggage limits?
Domestic baggage allowances can be lower than international ones and vary by airline and fare. Check before you pack, and prefer soft bags.
