Itinerary
6 Days at Lake Khövsgöl (Fly In, Slow Down)
Short answer
Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön, drive about 100 km to Khatgal and spend three nights on the lake's western shore riding, hiking and boating, then fly back. It's the least driving of any Mongolia trip with a real wilderness feel. Best late June to early September; book July flights early.

If you’d rather spend your holiday outdoors than in a vehicle, this is the most relaxed Mongolia trip there is: one flight, one transfer, and several days in one beautiful place.
Why it works
- Light driving: only the Mörön–Khatgal transfer.
- Activities from the door: riding, hiking, kayaking, herder visits.
- Cooler weather than the Gobi in midsummer.
Trade-offs
- Flight dependence and limited seats in July.
- Weather: rain and cold snaps happen even in summer at 1,645 m.
- One landscape: no desert, no Kharkhorin — combine with a few days in Terelj or Central Mongolia if you want variety.

Questions travelers ask
Is Khövsgöl worth it for just a few days?
Yes, if you fly. Three nights at the lake is the sweet spot. Driving there and back from Ulaanbaatar for a short trip isn't worth it.
What if my flight is cancelled?
Domestic flights are sometimes delayed or rescheduled. Keep a buffer day in Ulaanbaatar before your international flight; your crew can drive you back if needed, which takes two long days.
