Itinerary
5 Days in Mongolia: A Realistic First Trip
Short answer
With 5 days, stay in Central Mongolia: Ulaanbaatar → Hustai National Park (wild horses) → Elsen Tasarkhai (dunes, camels) → Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu → back to Ulaanbaatar. Drives are 2–6 hours a day, mostly paved. The Gobi is only realistic in 5 days if you fly to Dalanzadgad. For the gentlest option, base yourself in Terelj.

Five days is short for a country this size, so the goal is to avoid spending it in a vehicle. Central Mongolia is the answer: real variety within a few hours of the capital, mostly on paved roads.
Why this route
- Variety: wild horses, steppe, sand dunes, camels, a 16th-century monastery, the site of the Mongol capital.
- Manageable drives: the longest day is the paved return from Kharkhorin.
- Easy to customise: add a horse ride at Hustai or Elsen Tasarkhai, swap a night for Terelj, or add a herder-family stay.
The compromises
- No Gobi (Elsen Tasarkhai’s dunes are a taste, not the South Gobi).
- No Orkhon Valley — that needs 7 days. See 7 days in Mongolia.
- One night per stop. If you want more time in one place, drop Hustai and spend two nights at Elsen Tasarkhai or Kharkhorin.
Alternatives for 5 days
Slow and close: Terelj base. Three nights in Terelj with riding and hiking, one at Hustai. Very little driving.
Gobi by air. 5-day Gobi itinerary — fly to Dalanzadgad and back. Higher cost, desert scenery.
Who should run it
A driver with a comfortable vehicle is enough for this route; a guide adds a lot at Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu. A driver-guide is a sensible middle ground.

Questions travelers ask
Is 5 days enough for Mongolia?
Enough for a good taste of the countryside if you stay in one region. It's not enough to see the Gobi and Central Mongolia by road — trying to will mean most of your trip in a vehicle.
Can I do the Gobi in 5 days?
Only comfortably if you fly Ulaanbaatar–Dalanzadgad. See our 5-day Gobi itinerary.
What's the most relaxed 5-day option?
Base in Terelj for two or three nights (riding, hiking), with a day trip to the Chinggis Khaan statue and a night at Hustai. Total driving is low.
