Ger Camps in Mongolia: What to Expect
Short answer
Tourist ger camps are the standard accommodation outside Ulaanbaatar: guest gers with 2–4 beds and a stove, a restaurant ger and a toilet/shower block. Standards range from basic (pit toilets, limited hot water) to comfortable (ensuite gers, good beds). Most open roughly June to mid-September. Ask specifically about bathrooms, beds and electricity for each night — those are what affect comfort most.
Inside a guest ger
- 2–4 single beds (sometimes a double), bedding provided.
- A wood or dung stove; staff usually light it in the evening.
- A small table, stools, sometimes a light and socket.
- Low door — mind your head.
Bathrooms
The biggest variable. Typical setups:
- Shared block with flush toilets and hot showers (hot water may run at set hours).
- Ensuite gers at better camps.
- Pit toilets and no showers at basic camps and herder stays.
Food
Set meals in a restaurant ger: soups, mutton or beef with rice or noodles, salads, bread. Breakfast is often eggs, bread, porridge. Request vegetarian or dietary needs in advance.
Electricity, Wi-Fi, water
- Electricity often limited or evening-only.
- Wi-Fi rare outside larger camps.
- Drinking water: bottled or boiled.
Choosing camps
The same name can mean very different experiences year to year. Things to ask:
- Bathroom type and hot-water hours?
- Bed type and number per ger?
- Electricity in the ger?
- Distance to the sight?
- Is it busy with groups in July?
Payment
Camps are usually prepaid through your operator; if paying locally, expect cash.
Questions travelers ask
Do ger camps have electricity?
Most have some electricity — sometimes only in the evening or from solar/generators. Some gers have sockets; others share a charging point. Bring a power bank.
Can I get vegetarian food at ger camps?
Usually, if requested in advance. Choice is limited and repetitive. Vegans should expect more difficulty and may want to bring supplements to their diet.
Are ger camps open year-round?
Most tourist camps open roughly June to mid-September. A few near Ulaanbaatar and some in popular areas operate in winter.
